H.M. King Harald opened the new Embassy chancellery

On 6 July 2009 His Majesty King Harald of Norway officially opened the new Norwegian chancellery in Kalinausko street 24, in Vilnius. In parallel, Ms Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland, opened the new Finnish premises in the same building. The ribbons were cut together by H.M. the King, President Halonen and Mr Valdas Adamkus, President of the Republic of Lithuania. About 150 invited guests too part in the opening ceremony and the following reception, including ministers, ambassadors and the Norwegian and Finnish communities.

The ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway in Lithuania, H.E. Mr Steinar Gil comments: "The opening of the new chancellery premises is a realization of a joint project between Norwegian and Finnish representations in Lithuania, and we are proud of it as an example of Nordic cooperation efforts. We are very pleased with our new premises and their excellent location in a beautiful new building here in the centre of Vilnius. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the fulfilment of this project, not least Vilnius municipality and the Real Estate Company E.L.L with project partners. We are honoured and happy that his Majesty King Harald, President Halonen and President Adamkus agreed to be here to celebrate the start of this new chapter of our diplomatic representation in Lithuania." H.E. Marja-Liisa Kiljunen, Ambassador of the Republic of Finland, shares the positive outlook and hopes that the Embassy House will be a welcome addition to the urban landscape of Vilnius. "This is a great day for my staff and myself at the Embassy. The Embassy functioned in what were supposed to be temporary premises for 17 years! The Finnish Embassy is now located in a modern architecturally beautiful building with all the modern facilities and space. I am particularly happy that we share the Embassy House with the Norwegian colleagues. This will facilitate our Nordic cooperation further. I hope the Vilnius citizens also like the new building and I would like to express my appreciation to the City of Vilnius for a good cooperation during the project." H.M. the King visited Vilnius on July 6 to take part in the celebration of 1000 years since the first written mention of ‘Lithuania’. On this occasion President Adamkus had invited Heads of State of countries in the region. Among the participants were Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark, Their Majesties the King and Queen of Sweden, and several presidents.
